It isn’t every day that you come across new restaurants that literally knock your socks off and if I am being honest, I haven’t felt this excited about a restaurant since I visited PLAY for the very first time. A fresh, homegrown approach, BB has come on the scene with a bang, backed by 60+ collective years of hospitality expertise. Having launched and managed operations for some of the region’s most successful F&B venues including LPM and Zuma, BB’s founding team has knocked the nail on the head and created a concept that everyone must try!
Located in DIFC on Happiness Street, BB is all about social dining with elements of the East found throughout the experience. Delivered with polished but light-hearted service, and found in a compelling, compact interior, BB sits in a space that used to house an art gallery. Spread across three levels, which are connected by a stylish spiral staircase, the restaurant feels like a trendy London townhouse or secret speakeasy, immediately upping the cool factor. There are plenty of cosy nooks and crannies for a romantic night for two or you can opt to sit on the leafy green terrace or ground floor restaurant – there is also a larger dining spaces for big groups – the restaurant is huge yet tiny all at the same time (you get my jist…)
Choice is at the heart of the BB social dining experience – whether it’s a light business lunch or a full-on night out with friends, a night to enjoy the outdoor terrace or the intimate multi-level seating, clever ideas can be jotted down on the pen and pad provided, along with a phone plug portal at each of BB’s tables. On this particular occasion, dinner was our meal of choice, and we sat at the bottom of the restaurant (with a cosy corner to ourselves) and prepared to pick our poison from what I can only call an outstanding menu!
The mostly Asian-inspired menu is split into four Bs – bao, bites, bowls and BBQ. Every dish is designed for sharing, which is where the “social dining” theme comes in. We started strong with an amazing bowl of super green hummus, a genius blend of edamame, tahini and spinach. From there, we moved onto truffled gems and salmon carpaccio, the latter was super delicate and packed full of flavour – I was hooked from the word go! The truffle gems were also a delight – I’m not one that enjoys lettuce if I am being honest, but BBQed and covered in truffle, I am going to say yes every time!
Bao arrived next, perched on little wooden stands. My favourite was the crispy duck which was simply outstanding with zesty lime hoisin sauce. The chicken bang bang and Habibi were also addictive – I could have easily eaten 10 and still had space for more!
Bowls were also brilliant – I loved my beef pho! The Shabu Shabu is on the list for next time and supposed to be one of BBs signatures. Feeling fit to burst, we finished with some dishes from the BBQ – some freekeh aubergine and masala fish, both never faulting on taste and flavour. If by this point you still have room for dessert, tuck into the waffle apple pie – it’s a monster, but seriously delicious!
Another love at first bite moment for me, BB has it all! Fantastic staff, good prices, outstanding food and that ‘home away from home’ feel that keeps you coming back for more – we’ll definitely be back.
