Winner, winner – we have found one of our favourite dinners! If you, like me, have long been a fan of Tashas in Galleria Mall, then you will fall in love with the new Flamingo Rooms by Tashas. Located on the Turtle Lagoon at Jumeirah Al Naseem, neighbouring other fantastic restaurants such as Il Borro and Black Tap, this vibrant and stylish outdoor hub is becoming one of my favourite spots in Dubai.

Let me set the scene for you – it’s a balmy Saturday afternoon on arrival at Flamingo Rooms and the restaurant is flowing with people, enjoying birthdays, baby showers or like me, catching up with my maid-of-honour-to-be over a delicious lunch and a glass of South African champagne. Having only been back a week from Cape Town, it was the perfect spot to dissipate any holiday blues, and with the sun shining outside, we picked a seat by the bay windows.

There are SO many things to love about this spot! Natasha’s (the owner) signature attention to detail is prevalent in every aspect of the restaurant, from the uncomplicated and clean menu to the wonderful interiors. The largest Tashas concept to date has commissioned bespoke pieces by globally renowned design firm B&S Studio, which adds a unique touch to the elegant furnishings.

Flamingo Room-4Prepare to be WOWed from the moment you arrive through the walnut wood doors that open to reveal a beckoning marble champagne bar with sleek gold detailing. The restaurant itself is enveloped with stylishly simple banquettes, allowing the eye to be drawn to the Baobab inspired installation above. Wander outdoors, where seating is set within a pagoda, providing uninterrupted views of Jumeirah Al Naseem’s turtle lagoon, which is home to rehabilitated turtles. The attention to detail is second-to-none: everything from the door handles on the bathroom doors to the cushion covers that have been handmade in Cape Town – even the speakers are painted the same salmon pink as the walls. From the marble floors to the fish-scale walls and the sculptural light that looks like a giant orchid sprawling across the ceiling, the dining room is truly beautiful – if only she could come and design my flat!

Not only are the interiors immensely instagrammable, the menu is too! Reflecting commitment to quality ingredients and showcasing an impressive variety of revamped classics and glamorous dishes, bursting with seasonal flavours – passion and culinary creativity are evident throughout! Portions are not only pretty, but they are more than generous too! With so many fantastic things to choose from, picking your poison is the hardest challenge!

After a few too many ‘oohs and aahs’, we started with the butternut carpaccio – a combination of charred butternut slices, pumpkin seeds, pomegranate, coriander, parsley, lemon vinaigrette, honey and crème fraîche; and the white fish ceviche – ponzu, ginger, black salmon roe, red onion, cucumber with chilli, lemon zest, coriander and lime juice; and finally, the octopus carpaccio with mango emulsion, japanese mayonnaise, rocket, candied orange, radish, fennel and citrus vinaigrette. Each dish presented unique favours and textures and as you can imagine, each dish was literally licked clean!

For mains, we indulged in the delicious (yet spicy!) calamari mozambique with lemon butter, peri-peri sauce, tarragon, roasted cherry tomatoes and shoestring fries. This was accompanied by Natasha’s famous cacio e pepe with parmesan, butter, black pepper, fresh tagliatelle and extra truffle – you might think this sounds simple, but my oh my it will knock your socks off!!

All of Flamingo Room’s divine dishes are perfectly accompanied by a sophisticated and extensive beverage menu. We loved the selection of South African wine and champagne too. Make sure you try The Flamingo Royale or the Turtle Bay – they also make a mean Espresso Martini!

No visit is complete without a visit to The Collective by Charles Greig – a boutique full of South Africa’s best brands. The Charles Greig bronzes are simply stunning – we also love the collection of swimwear and sunglasses on offer. A place I plan to visit time and time again, Flamingo Rooms by Tashas is one of my favourite new restaurants in Dubai.
